Chapter 34

After they sanitized the house of any sign of their presence, Bennett drove them on a Chicago tour. He was mainly going around to avoid being in one spot for any length of time while brainstorming ideas.

Online, they found three names that matched William Ryan in the Chicago area. One man was a student, and the other a lawyer at a local firm. The third man, listed as Bill Ryan, appeared to be in the Air Force by the uniform in his profile picture. There was little doubt that the person they were looking for was the lawyer.

The initial rush from earlier was gone, leaving both men anxious about the next step. Taking on an organized crime family was never part of their training, but Noah knew one thing. “For the next phase, I need us to split up.”

They were at a coffee shop downtown off the marketplace district. The weather was colder than last week, so they sat inside.

Bennett objected. “I want to help.”

“I know, but we dealt with the threat against your parents. I don’t think things are over in Arrow Point. You’re going to be needed there more than with me.”

He sat back and looked skeptically at Noah. He didn’t have an appropriate reply.

“I’m also not going to mention what my next step is. That way, you can’t testify. I’m going to drop you off at the airport, and you can catch the next flight back to Casper or Cheyenne.”

“I wish you would reconsider.”

Noah knew the risks they had taken. He didn’t want to cost Bennett his job or jail time for them both. Noah pulled out the wad of cash that Carmelo had on him. It was over six hundred dollars.

He passed the money over and stood. “That will more than cover the flight. Let’s go.”

Despite the late hour, there still seemed to be heavy traffic, and Bennett mentioned that it never stopped in this area. All too soon, Noah pulled up to departures at O’Hare, and Bennett reached over to the backseat and grabbed his bag. “Are you sure?”

Noah held out his hand. “I’m sure. I’ll keep in touch and hopefully be home soon.”

After a firm shake, Bennett closed the door and headed inside the airport. Noah could tell he wasn’t thrilled and didn’t understand fully. He needed answers, and with what he was about to do, he didn’t want Bennett involved.
